Forced marriage
Forced marriage is a harmful practice in which one or both spouses do not agree, but they are coerced to go through it, by psychological pressure, physical, financial, sexual or emotional abuse, which can lead the person to be kept illegal, beaten and raped.
More than 100 million girls may be victims of forced marriages over the next decade, according to a study by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). These marriages occur throughout the world but are most common in South Asia and in areas of the Sub-Saharan Africa, reaching 65% of girls in Bangladesh, 48% in India and 76% in Niger. Karma Nirvana Organization, based in Derby, in central England, annually receives 6,500 calls related to forced marriages.
